Plitra (or Plytra) is a small fishing village on the Laconic gulf, 30 km from Monemvasia. It offers not only an excellent beach but also the rare sight of a sunken city. Adjoining the SE end of the present harbour are the remains of ancient Asopos which had its own currency and is considered to have been the harbour of Sparta. In AD 375 the city was destroyed by an earthquake. The remaining walls and architectural parts can be seen on the beach, others are submerged in the sea. Interesting are the remains of large pithoi buried in the pebbles. |
